5 THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE 2021/22 PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON

One of the craziest Premier League seasons in recent times finally concluded, with lots of stakes decided on the final gameday. The title, European places and relegation were all hard-fought throughout the season, with progress or decline for others in between all that. Here’s what we learned from this season:

1. City and Liverpool in a league of their own: As had been the case in 2 of the previous 4 years, Manchester City and Liverpool finished in the top 2 of the EPL table with significant distance between them and the rest of the league. Since 2016/17, Only the two sides have amassed over 500 points amongst the top 6 teams. Both sides also stand out as the only EPL teams to lose 30 league games or less in that period. Other top sides such as Chelsea and Manchester United stood between 45–70 losses.

Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have, over time, created systems involving quality/high-potential players which dismantle the opposition either via possession and pressing triggers or quick passing, positional rotations and even line-breaking passes from the goalkeepers.

Liverpool and City have undoubtedly spent loads of money on on-field talent in this period, but through data-led recruitment, a clear vision and efficient organizational structure, these funds haven’t been wasted superfluously like…
